Tebbe Gerdes Janssen to Benson in 1881
My father--JOHN TABBEN JOHNSON (Janssen in Germany)was born in Ostfriesland, Germany October 6, 1877 to TEBBE GERDES JANSSEN (b 1832) and GERTJEN MEHRINGS CLAUSSEN. The family came to America via Baltimore on ship Braunschweig Oct 13, 1881 and then by train moved on to Benson, Woodford County,IL.In 1882 the family moved to Danforth, IL. John's three sisters were: Lucy (m. George Tammen), Kate (m. William Yohnka), and Gertrude (m. Oliver Sluyter).
GERTJEN MEHRINGS CLAUSSEN was born to JOHANN HENRICK CLAUSSEN and HILKE HAINKS WILLMS.
Family notes say that Gertje's sister, REBECCA and her husband HARM FRITZEN were already in Benson when the Janssens arrived. Perhaps Gerje's oldest son HARRY MEHRINGS by (her first marriage) was also in Benson and met the Janssens at the train.
I would be anxious to hear from anyone who believes we have a connection or who has history about the Germans arriving and farming in Woodford County.
