It's my misreading of a family entry I found in the Census.

The death certificate for Essie (or Essey) Brown states mother as Mary Etta Brown. The father is James Bentley born in Neon, Kentucky.
Mary Etta Brown's mother was Rebecca Brown and her father was George W. Brown
Rebecca was married to George W. Brown. They were together in the 1910 Census, (Magisterial District No. 4, Greenup Co., Ky.) having been married for 20 years. By 1920 Rebecca is listed as a widow and the head of the household. (Census for Fullerton, Greenup Co., Ky) In 1930 she is listed on the Census as living with her son Charles Brown.(South Portmouth/Springville, Greenup Co., Ky)
In the 1910 Census Mary E. (Etta) is listed as 19 and living at home. In the 1920 Census she is no longer living with her mother. In the 1930 Census Mary Etta is not present at the home of her brother, Charles Brown (with her mother), but her daughter, listed as Essie Bentley niece is there.Essie is my grandmother. She was born 21 Dec 1914. The place of birth on the death certificate was Fulton, Ky. She died at Jenkins Hospital 27 May 1939.
