Actually, in 1900 Albert is listed as single. This looks like him in the 1910 census with his wife, Ella, who he married about 1901. Also living with him is younger brother, George:

I've looked and can't find Albert/Elbert Smith/Bridges in the 1870 census. That might answer a few of your questions. Do you have the marriage record for Thomas and Ella? I'm wondering what her maiden name is in that record. Have you ordered her death certificate? If you're lucky it will list her parents names. You might also want to order the death certificate for Elbert Bridges. I think the following is him:
