Nelda,
Greetings, I too ostensably descend from Robert (shoemaker) Cate, at least to the extent that it can be proven that any of us do. There are no documents to prove that Robert & (Mary) Ann ever had children. Just the occurence of other Cates in the area. I do believe that it's a good possibility that some or all of the Cates families of Henrico VA & Orange NC descend from Robert.
Alternatively, however, Joshua Cates who died in KY in the 1820's (I'm speaking strictly from memory. I have some info on Joshua, just not at my fingertips right now) supposedly claimed that it was he who founded the Orange Co., N.C. branch of the Cates family. I'm not aware of any official documentation to back up his claim either.
In the absence of documentation, I've never officially added Robert to my family tree. Though I've gathered as much information on him as can be found and believe that he is the most likely father of my sixth great grandfather, Benjamin Cate. Benjamin was born circa 1720 (by my own estimate) and was living in Orange Co. by 1750. Little is know of Benjamin or his origins. I have a scattering of records mentioning him by name. They seem to peter out about 1765. I have copies of the wills of two of his sons, Benjamin Jr. (1798) and Richard (1806). The latter being my fifth great grandfather.
Richard's sons moved to Sumner Co., Tennessee in 1808/9 then on to Hopkins Co., KY in 1813/4. There they remained until my grandfather moved just a few miles north to Evansville, IN, where I was born (The first of my fathers family to be born outside of the "Catesville, KY" area in over 150 years).
I'd be happy do discuss the Cates family with you in more detail. Feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]
Dave
