Thank you so much, Chris.Shortly after I posted my query, I found a masterfully done genealogy, here:
http://www.smith-genealogy.comhttp://www.smith-genealogy.com.I have conferred with the author, and we believe my Thomas Jefferson Smith d. 1860-1870 in Russell Co., VA is the same as that belonging to John and Kezia Pease Smith of MA (family referenced below, from your kind post).
Thomas's brother George Washington Smith b. 1794 also came south, and settled in Greene Co., TN bef 1830.He moved to GA (abt 1860?), and died in Harrisborough (I think), GA in Jun 1880.
While John Forde Smith was a clothier and manufacturer of wool cloth in MA, his brother Thomas of Russell Co., VA was a wool carder (c1850) and machinist (c1860).According to some notes, each of these men began a related business which was unsuccessful.
I have just connected my ggg-grandfather Thomas (one of my most difficult lines) to his ancestry, and words can hardly describe how happy I am about that!
Thank you again for your help,
Michelle
