Muddy Brook, The Elbow Tract, Equivalent Land
I'm looking for anyone that can help me with land found in Hampshire County back in 1728-1742. The land I'm looking for was known as the Equivalent land, or the Elbows. (Can anyone tell me exactly where the Elbows are and what that refers too.) At different times it's been known as New Marlborough, Kingsfield, Kingsford, Muddy Brook. Today I believe it's near Muddy Brook. In the 1730's there were several families that were SQUATTERS on this land and later went to court to be allowed to stay and were granted that right if they built houses of at least 16' square and of 7' stud. They were also required to have at least 5 acres in English Grass and each had to pay 5 lb. (This had to be done within 5 years.)
Tract identified as follows
(Tract of un-appropriated lands of the Providence in the County of Hampshire bounded South partly by That Tract of Land called the Elbows & Partly by Brookfield Township, East by Ware River, North by Land lately Granted to Col. Lamb & Company & West by that part of the Equivalent Lands belonging to John Read of Boston Esq. Containing fourteen Hundred & forth three Acres.)
In the late 1700's this land became part of Ware I believe, as some of the residents went to court to stop the incorporation.
Any help locating this 1443 acres greatly appreciated.Thank YouKen Rood
