Richard Bidgood, Eng.> Mass. Bay Colony
"Richard Bidgood, of Romsey, County Hants, merchant," sailed in *CONFIDENCE*, of London, two hundred tons, John Gibson, Master, from Southampton the last of April, "by vertue of the Lord Treasurers warrant of the 11th of April,1638." He settled [at least initially in] Boston, Mass. Bay Colony [now Suffolk County].
Richard is listed alone on the ship's passenger list. It is possible that a family followed after him, but it is also possible he emigrated as a young man to make his fortune, and married later in the colony.
A Richard Bidgood was christened 21 Feb. 1617 in Tiverton, Devon, England, Father: Humphry Bidgood. However, another Richard appears the next generation in Devon who's father was Richard, so this suggests that would have been the wrong family.
A Richard Bidgood, this time christened on 26 Apr. 1612, at Wandsworth, London, England, Father: Lawrance Bidgood. This latter gentleman would fit well for a young merchant from Hampshire.
Am trying to connect this colonist to the Bitgoods of RI & eastern CT, ca. 1750-1800s. Any help identifying him, his parents and/or other ancestors, siblings, spouse(s), & children/descendants, greatly appreciated.
Cheers! DC Young
