Have you tried contacting the town halls and historical societies of the towns, also try Androscoggin Historical Society in Lewiston at http://www.rootsweb.com/~meandrhs/http://www.rootsweb.com/~meandrhs/
Another thought are the churches in the area. My mother was from Durham, Maine and as a ward of the state of Maine my adoption went through the court system in Androscoggin County. St Joseph's church on Main Street in Lewiston-207-795-5078 had something to do with taking care of me until I was adopted. I was born in the Florence Critenden Home for Unwed Mother in Alexandria,Va.so my birth mother had gone out of state to have me and brought me back by train to be turned over to St Joseph's. Another thought is The Maine Children's Home for Little Wanderers-http://www.mainechildrenshome.org in Augusta and Waterville. The history of the organization is on line and they have been in business since 1899. You also might try the 1900 census for the mother's name.
Good luck and let us all know if there are some other places to try for future reference!
