Roman numerals indicate a succession of father and sons and/or grandsons (sometimes nephews also) of the same name.

Each person with the Packard surname and the spouse(s) of these persons is assigned a unique identification number. The Initial capital letter S stands for Samuel, the 1638 immigrant to America. His descendants are assigned, for each generation, single numbers in the hexadecimal system (1 to F,males) or single lower case letters (a to i, females) in order of birth of that sex. Other initial capital letter(s) have been chosen for Packard descendant lines beginning after Samuel which have not yet been shown to connect to Samuel. S? is used for Packards with possible but unknown connecton to any specific Packard line. Ancestors and siblings of Samuel and potential ancestors do not have an ID number. W1/ and H1/ stand for first wife and first husband of, etc. This Packard and Allied Families Assoc. numbering system is described in detail in a separate document. It is an extension of the system devised by Karle Packard. This is NOT the same system as modified by Saxton ¨32. Some of the source references in this datafile to CFP ¨169 include the ID number CFP assigned to Packards and descendants of female Packards using a different system.
Certain initial capital letters are used in this datafile to represent persons of other surnames with the number defined and used by the author of genealogies for those surnames. Examples are: A for Alden ¨282, C for Cooke ¨131, D for Dunbar ¨200 , E for Edson ¨27, N for Nash ¨221, T for Thompson ¨270.
The symbol ¯ indicates an immigrant to America. MF indicates immigration on the Mayflower.

The status of early settlers and/or proprietors of Bridgewater in Plymouth Colony is indicated as follows:
BPBridgewater Proprietor but NOT a settler.
BPS Bridgewater Proprietor and Settler.
IPSInheritd & Initial Settler on Proprietor Share.
PPS Purchased & Initial Settler on Proprietor Share.

Ref. "The Family Orcutt" by Helen Judson, with Elbert Orcutt; reprinted in part from a manuscript in the Maine State Library by "The Edsonian" vol.44, no.1, spring 1992. ¨25.
Orcutt is the Anglicized version of the Scotch family name Urchard, Orchard, Urquhart, Orquart, or Orchar. Early spellings in New England were Orcut, Orcott, Orcitt, and Orcit.
Judson gives a brief summary of the origins of the family Urquhart in Scotland and its tie to the Royal Family of Bruce. It was originally Catholic. Family members in the vicinity of Inverness became Presbyterian. That branch fled to England during the Reformation.
The cited reprint refers to Fillongley, Filloughley, and Willoughley, England as the town/village of residence of Edsons and Susannah Orcutt.
No records have been found of the names of Susannah's parents, although
according to Mitchell's "History of Bridgewater" Susannah was the sister of William Orcutt. William was the immigrant ancestor of the Orcutts in America. There is a parish record of William, son of William Orchar, being baptized 18 Dec 1618 in Fillongley.
