Re: German Settlement in Sterling/Deep River
My Great-Grandfather Vance Marks lived in MI when my Grandfather Lyle Marks was born.It is said that Vance was born in Germany, and was a logger. Also some info that he had something to do with horses. He died young and is burried near Cleveland, Ohio.I have very little to go on.Have you encountered "Vance" anywhere??I don't know who his parents are or if he had siblings.
Lyle's wife Minnie Hein was also born in MI and her family moved to Cleveland. That is where they met and married. What was it that brought so many families to Cleveland from MI??Logging? Railroads?
My grandparents also spent many vacations "back in MI" between WWI and WWII.My grandmother would not say much about why they went there. My mother had told me (this is scarry) that they went to KKK meetings.Later when they came to their senses (said my mother)they destroyed all pictures and info about the KKK.
Ugly story, but when you dig around, who knows what you'll find????
