Found (I believe) the family you are looking for on a 1900 census for Orange County, Anaheim. It was taken June 15, 1900. Sheet number 12. It's the right family, right location and there's a HERBERT, with the right birth year. I hope this is helpful and not coming too late in your search.

Henry C. Gade, Head of house, white, male. B. April 1846, age 54. Married for 18 years. He was born in Wisconsin. Both parents born in Germany. I was not able to read his occupation (sorry).

Mary, Wife, white female. B. October 1864, age 35. Married 18 years. Mother of 7 children, all 7 living. She was born in Michigan. Both of her parents were born in Germany.

Laura, daughter, white female born June 1883. Age 16, single. She was born in California. Attended school that year.

Vera, daughter, white female born May 1885. Age 15, single. She was born in California. Attended school that year.

Mabel, daughter, white female born April 1887. Age 13, single. Born in California. Attended school that year.

Georgia, daughter, white femail. Born October 1889. Age 10, single. Born in CA. Attended school that year.

Hannah??, daughter, white female. Born July 1893. Age 6, single. Attended school that year.

Thelma, daughter, white female. Born October 1897. Age 2.

HERBERT, son, white male. Born January 1900. Age 4 months.

In 1910, Henry and Mary are listed on the census again in Anaheim, California. Their eldest daughter, Laura, has married, but is living with Henry and Mary. Laura has 2 daughters of her own, which are living there as well.

The family was no longer listed in California in 1920, and they were not listed on the Michigan 1920 census either.
