In the 1870 census Adelbert M. Carpenter 14 yrs. old is the son of Joseph W.(45 yrs. old) and Sarah (43 yrs. old). There is another son Parris age 12, and 2 daughters Alice 16 yrs.and Nora B. 3 yrs. old. They had land worth $600 and personal estate is valued at $200. The father Joseph was born in New York, and could neither read or write. I have been researching my grandfather Joseph Carpenter.I have found that there were at least 4 Joseph Carpenters living in Lapeer County during the 1800's.My grandfather was married to Elizabeth Valantine, their ages in 1870 were 54 and 49.They were both born in New York. It seems that most of the Carpenters came from New York. Their is a record of a Joseph Carpenter who had a son Lewis C Carpenter, born Mayfield in 1851. Lewis C. had 4 known Carpenter children: Martin; Joseph who lived in Columbiaville and North Branch; Flora who married Feb. 14, 1901 Lafayette Huntly and lived in Lapeer Twp; Sarah Carpenter who married Mr. Marfileus, and had a daughter Rosetta Marfileus. Do you know what the "W" stands for in Joseph W. During my research I have run into many of the names listed above, if I can help you anymore you may E-mail me. Good Luck.
