Seeking family roots of Otis W. BURTON in Vermont and New Hampshire:
Otis W. BURTON was born in VT, circa 1820. The name of his first wife (mother of Edwin O., Henry James., Martha A., and Willard Levi) is unknown; she may have died before 7 July 1860.
By 1860 Otis W. BURTON had moved from VT to Charleston, Sullivan Co., NH, and was there enumerated with four children in the 7 July 1860 US Census:
BURTON, Otis W., 40 M, Farmer, $3000 Real & $900 Personal Estate, b VT
BURTON, Edwin O., 16 M, Farmer, b NH
BURTON, Henry J., 14 M, b NH
BURTON, Martha A., 12 F, b NH
BURTON, Williard L., 8 M, b NH
FARNSWORTH, Fanny A., 35 F, Housekeeper, b NH
After the death of his first wife, Otis W. BURTON married Jeanette ( Jenny) Church VARNEY. She was born in NH circa 1842 and it is not clear whether she was a widow or if this was her maiden name. In either event she had become a member of the family by 1870.
By 1870 Otis W. BURTON had moved from NH to Union City, Branch County, Michigan, and was there enumerated with his family:
BURTON, Otis W., WM 50, Farmer, $8500 Real/$1500 Personal Estate, b in VT
BURTON, Jennett, WF 28, Keeping House, b NH
BURTON, Willard, WM 19, Works on Farm, b NH
PULLMAN, Willard, WM 19, Works on Farm, b NY
Family tradition also holds that Otis W. BURTON married Roxanna Corral in the town of Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan. It is not clear whether this marriage preceeded of followed his marriage to Jeanette/Jenny Church Varney.
At least one on-line posted genealogy (at WWW.FamilySearch.Org) holds that the parents of Otis W. BURTON were James BURTON & Martha CRAIGE of Andover and Weston in Windsor County, Vermont, however no sources or documentation for this claim are evident and it may or may not be accurate.
Thanks for any help or suggestions you are able to offer.
