Hi,
This is what I found.
1850 Census, Franklin, Lenawee, MI
Slater, Henry J, head, age 49,B: NJ
Ester, age 28 Born NY
Mary Ann, age 15
James, age 11
Louisa 21,
McCunan, James age 34 Insane
Hendrix, Harriett age 21
Martha, age 8
Doesn't say how McCunan or Hendrix are related if they are.

In August 1862, James enlisted in the Army, Company E, Michigan 18th Infantry Regiment. Mustered out October 22, 1863 at Nashville, TN

1880 Census, Adrian, Lenawee, MI
James age 40 Laborer
wife, Eliza age 29
Son. Emerson age 14 at school
Son, George, age 18 laborer
Family lives on Ormsby Street

1890 Veterans Schedule, Adrian, MI
James Slater, partially insane for 27 years due to Sun stroke while serving in the war.

1900 census, Adrian, Lenawee, Mi
Still on Ormsby St.
James, age 60, divorced, common laborer

1910, Adrian, Lenawee, MI, still on Ormsby ST.
James, divorced age 70, has own income
