Sorry to say the LaNell you asked about is not your Robert, but a woman. The LaNell info on Page 149B of Minnesota , Steele County 1900 Census is as follows:

Steele County, Owatonna Township, ED#135, sheet 10B
Institution-Owatonna State Public School

Lanell, Lee, white, female. Born Oct 1878, 21, single. Born MN, Both parents born Ireland.

She was listed as an employee of the State Public School, which was a State orphanage, located in the city of Owatonna.

I did a 1900 statewide check with the Lanell/LaNell name and came up with nothing for your Robert--I even checked Nationwide 1910, 1920, & 1930, had no results. Do you have any other possible spellings of this name...any other info? If so, let me know if and I can do another look-up.
