The Children's Blizzard - 1888
An interesting book that examines the January 13, 1888 blizzard that struck the Dakotas and Nebraska hardest. Many people died because it began on the first "warm" day in many.Adults were caught doing chores and children were caught at school. Many of them died trying to make it to home or shelter.
The book looks at the families that had come to the edge of civilization and the tragedy that followed. It does a nice job of explaining the cause of the weather, the history of the time, and the politics surrounding forecasting.
The settlers endured the blizzards of 1873, the "Snow Winter" of 1880-81, the "Winter of the Blue Snow" of 1886-87, and the Children's Blizzard of 1888.Of course there were also the prairie fires, grasshoppers, drought, and thunderstorms. It gives you an appreciation of just how hard it was living on the prairie.
