Sorry about the virus...how did you get it? I am happy to find someone who is interested in the Caleb Vail family. At this time I do not believe that they are connected to the Thomas or Jeremiah Vail families, this after many exchanges with other Vail researchers and after studying those Vail genealogies which I have copies of. E.M. Vail thought that Caleb was perhaps the son of Isaac(3)Thomas(2), Thomas(1), but he indicated that Isaac(3) was a question mark. I find no Isaac that fits the written history. I am suspecting another family with the surname of VEAL or VEALLE or some other variation. There is little doubt that Job Vail was a Loyalist or Tory during the Rev. War. This may be a clue. Also that Job married in the Dutch community, another potential clue. The family history puts him in modern day Putnam County and probably the Fishkill area of Dutchess County, NY. This is quite a challenge for me. I have personally spoken to a descendent of Job Vail who still lives in the family home of Job's son, Frederick Vail, New Berlin, Chenango County, NY, but he does not have information about his great grandfather 5 generations ago.
My interest in all of this is tangential. I believe that Job Vail or his brother Daniel, or perhaps his father, Caleb, was a friend of my grandfather, James Smith, who was a loyalist soldier in the British Legion 1778-1783. James Smith's daughter, Hannah, married Job's son, Frederick Vail. I believe another of James Smith's daughter's was my grandmother, Catherine (Southard) Smith. I believe that James and Catherine lived in Fishkill, NY, after the war and I would not be surprized to find that whereever the Vails were living before they moved to New Berlin I will also find James Smith and family. I also expect to find the Smith family in close proximity to the Caleb Vail family...if I could only place the Vail family somewhere for sure . I have been on the trail of the Vails for about 8 years.
I am hoping that the more I find about Job Vail and his family, the more I will also find out about James Smith and Catherine Southard.
Ken
