I am attempting to research the parentage of Samuel SHELLEY b. 2 Aug 1760 Hempstead Plains, LI, NY, d. 18 Mar 1863 Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ.He married Elenor CUDDEBACK b. 1 Jul 1778 Wantaugh, Nassau Co., LI, NY, d. 18 Dec 1860 Wantage, Sussex Co., NJ.
From a pension application from the Revolution, I only know that his father lived in New York City when the British took that place. He remained in that city until the British compelled his mother to leave Long Island, stealing everything she had.His father was a rebel, and by trade a ship carpenter. The British had tried to get him on board their ships and they at last caught him and placed him on board a vessel. The vessel met with an accident somewhere on the coast and he was sent in the woods to score timber for repairs. He watched for his opportunity and escaped. He found his way to around Newark and concealed himself for some time. When it became safe for him to appear he got word to Samuel's mother who escaped from the Island in a coaster commanded by his Uncle with such things as she had been able to save in a hogshead buried in the cellar. She carried Samuel with her. Then they sent Samuel to New York again, where he stayed until his Boss got killed by an accident. He then got back to Newark and was in that neighborhood until he entered the service around 1780.
His father lived in Canoe Brook, NJ ca 1780, but I don't know anything else about his parents, or if he had any brothers or sisters. If anyone can help or offer any suggestions, I would be most appreciative!
