NYC (only) had police census taken in 1890 and can be used as a replacement for 1890 Federal Census that had been burnt. You can search it to see if you can find them in NYC at that time.
Another suggestion is to follow backwards from 1900 to ???? on his name in City Directory to see if at one point he is not listed there anymore. If you can't find him for 3-4 years, assume that he didn't live there and moved into the area about the time when he appreared.That would give you the timeframe of appr. moving into the city.
After 1913, his wife should have been listed in the city directory as a widow of ... unless she predeceased him. Follow her until she is no longer listed. That could mean three things: either she moved to another place, got married again, or died.
1880 census is indexed only for families with children of 10 years old and younger.If they had children of that age, they should be indexed. 1880 index is not for specific State, it is Federal and will list every family in US.
