Re: Adoption 1859-1860
Thank you for the insights; it is much appreciated.
I shall now start with the New York State Home Missionary Society (I first must figure out how to reach them) because I believe the adopted father Reverend John C. Holbrook was working from there. He returned to New York in 1859 from California just before the motherless children (Martha and Ella Gazlay) returned to New York in 1859 from California (the children's mother Anna Sophia Masterton Gazlay unexpectantly died in San Francisco, CA).
It was written by the Reverend John C. Holbrook that he and his wife were "permitted to adopt" the children.I always wondered what "permitted to adopt" meant.
Again, thank you for the many possibilities in searching for their adoption.I shall use them all.
