I am very appreciative for the lead that you provided, and that I finally had a chance to follow up in full.I found neighbors to Samuel and his wife, in the 1850 census, who appear to have become acquainted with them in Pennsylvania... The surname (Hummer) is very familiar from my Mullen research in a very isolated part of Lancaster County, PA.Turns out that Samuel and his wife Elizabeth (nee Oliver) had 9 children who show up in various records, born between 1851 and 1874.the three who died in 1878 most likely were victims of an epidemic of yellow fever... I'd no idea that the disease had created such havoc so far north until I did some reading on the internet.
