Children of G. W. and Celinda (THOMAS) ROUSH
George Washington and Celinda K. (THOMAS) ROUSH had six children, three of whom died as infants or as small children and are buried in the Roush Cemetery, Cheshire Twp., Gallia Co., OH.The Gallia County Genealogical Society has transcriptions for the Roush Cemetery on their website, and they have the following information.
Roush, George Z., Roush Cemetery, CH Twp., d. 7/26/1854, age 11y 10m 12d; inscription -- s/o G. W. & C. K.
Roush, Mary K., Roush Cemetery, CH Twp., d. 1/1/1855, age 10m 26d; inscription -- d/o G. W. & C. K.
Roush, Judah M., Roush Cemetery, CH Twp., d. 7/31/1854, age 3m 27d; inscription -- d/o G. W. & C. K.
These are the right names, since they are a close match to what is in the "History of The Roush Family In America" (1928) -- Rev. Lester LeRoy Roush, but the dates don't make sense. Here are the calculated birth dates for the three children.
George:14 Sep 1842
Mary:about 5 Feb 1854
Judah:4 Apr 1854
George couldn't have been born in 1842 since he isn't in the 1850 census with his parents. Also, his parents weren't married until 1848 and his mother wasn't born until 8 Nov 1827 (age 14 in 1842).There also is a conflict related to the birth dates of Mary and Judah since they couldn't have been born two months apart.I suspect that they were twins but I don't know which birth date to pick as the correct one.Or it may be that the problem isn't with the birth dates but with the ages listed or the death dates listed.
Mary and Judah are listed at OhioGravestones.org ( http://ohiogravestones.org/http://ohiogravestones.org/ ), which helps some but not as much as I would like.
Judah M., Dau. of G. W. & C. K. Roush, Died July 31, 1854, Aged 3m 27d.
Mary K., Dau. of G. W. & C. K. Roush, Died Jan 1, 1855, Aged ?ms 26d.
If you assume that Judah and Mary are twins, having Mary die at the age of 8 months and 26 days results in about the right birth date, about 4 or 5 Apr 1854.However, it's hard for me to imagine how an 8 could be mistaken for a 10, and the photo at the website isn't a high enough resolution for me to decipher the number for the months on Mary's stone.
There obviously are some transcription mistakes here but I am at a loss as to how I can straighten this out.I am adding these folks to my database at WorldConnect and I hate to have bad data in there.I hope that someone has better information, either through access to the actual headstones or some other method.Thank you.
