Early Johnsons of Highland & Clinton Counties

By Gary E Young February 01, 2012 at 04:41:26

Many Johnsons came from central Virginia to Highland County in the first decade of the 19th century. Most were Quakers. They settled chiefly in Fairfield twp where there are 21 heads of household named Johnson in the 1820 census.Others were in Liberty twp,Paint, and Madison. Some soon moved into lower Clinton County.I am interested in charting most of them, but am particularly anxious to identify the 9 children of William and Polly (Watkins) Johnson who had married in 1795 in Goochland Co., Va.They seem to have come to Highland Co around 1808.I have been told that William Johnson died 12 Mar 1835,but cannot find the evidence for that date and do not know if William died in Highland or Clinton County or perhaps elsewhere.Five proven sons are:Benjamin,Thomas B., John William,Robert W.,and George.PERHAPS Watkins Johnson (b 1799) and Jesse K (b. ca 1804) were other sons?Any help will be appreciated.
