Clarification on Generation 2 - caveat that this family is one that I've been seeking information regarding, as his is the least known (to me) of all the children of RoburtusMansfield Copeland and his wife Sarah William Perry.(yes, "William" named after her father William Perry, I presume).
John G. A. Copeland had been married twice, although all I know at the moment is that his first wife was named "Minnie."He had two more children than I have names for, and I don't know which, if any, of his children belonged to the first wife, Minnie.
I keep hoping to find someone who knows more about this family than I have found thus far.
Also I will say that the parents Roburtus & Sarah Copeland, lived in an era of creative names for children, some having as many as 4 given names--although most of those names get lost to later generations.
Regarding John's other 2 names, it is difficult to be certain.
As a sidebar, I descend from John’s brother Richard – who for all my life I had thought was named Richard Marcus Copeland, because that is how he identified himself. His son, my Grandfather, fully believed that was his name.It wasn’t until a year or so ago when a TX cousin sent me a photocopy of the family pages of Roburtus & Sarah Copeland’s Bible that I learned they had named him “Richard Mark Copeland.”He had modified it after he grew up to something he thought sounded better.Perhaps several of his siblings did the same.
Unfortunately, their Bible didn’t give full names for all of their children.
Back to John – his mother’s father was named John Gustavus/Gustavos Perry, and I believe his first 2 names were for her father. As for the ‘Albern/Abner/Albert’ I am not sure. But he may have chosen to normalize whatever that name was to Albert just as his brother, my great grandfather, turned ‘Mark’ into “Marcus.”It will take more research to ever hope to untangle that part of his name.I suspect that the name on the death certificate is more likely a real given name, although perhaps not the complete set of given names.
For Generation 3 on your list, regarding Grover A. Copeland - his middle name was likely really Alpheus, the same middle name as that of one of Roburtus Mansfield Copeland’s brothers. But again, more research would be needed to assure that was so.
