Nina F. Bailey: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
East Oregonian (Pendleton, OR) - May 14, 2005
Deceased Name: Nina F. Bailey
ARLINGTON -- The funeral service for Nina F. Bailey of Hermiston will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Arlington. Burial will follow at the Arlington Cemetery.
She died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at her home at the age of 94.
Mrs. Bailey was born Jan. 26, 1911, in Arlington at her Grandma Smith's home to Lillian and William Ries. Her mother took her to the family home in Olex soon after, and she lived and went to school there until transferring to Arlington in the fourth grade. When she was in the sixth grade, her parents bought the Olex Hotel, so she transferred back to Olex and finished school there.
She married Arthur "Art" Bailey on Dec. 24, 1929, in Arlington. Over the years she worked as a cook's helper at several ranches, at a bakery (where she met her husband), as a hotel maid and in grocery stores.
Her oldest son, Bob, died in 1963, and her husband died a year later. Instead of withdrawing she took on the task of helping raise a grandson, Robert. He helped keep her young and full of life. Nina spent lots of time working at the church bazaar, embroidering countless dish towels and afghans, and also worked many years on the Election Board. She was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Lovella Conboy and husband Leslie, and Sharon Matle, both of Hermiston; son Stanley Bailey and wife Cindy of McNary; 11 grandchildren, nine step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Burns Mortuary of Hermiston is in care of arrangements.
Contributions can be made in her memory to the Arlington United Methodist Church.
