My name is Dawn Gardner and I am researching my husband's biological side of his family. We were given a letter from his paternal grandfather Del Dunbar that was written to his wife Melba Dunbar. The letter was written from Del (while he was working in Fields Station) and dated 12/13/1915 . His wife Melba was living in Burns Oregon.
The letter talks about him working on a ranch and traveling to Denio to get a "bossing job".The interesting note is that inhe states "we caught our supposedly man and his trial is today at 2:00" and then he mentions that he is going to see Austin at the trial and give him money to give to Melba in Burns with hopes that he will be able to move her to Denio and his new job.
When I googled trials 1915 Denio Oregon, I came up with several hits about a Sheriff named William Austin Goodman. Austin started his law enforcementduty in 1915.We were wondering if this could possibly be the same Austin. His bio said that he was a sheriff for 10 years in Harney County before being shot down by a man named Cody.Austin was also a ranch hand before becoming sheriff. So maybe that is how Del and he knew each other.Maybe Del worked for Austin in caputuring criminals?
We are looking for any information such as ranches in that area, trial information, anything.I have sent a email request to their historical society but it keeps coming back failed.
