This would depend on the county of either death or home. In most counties these are found in the Probate Office in the County Courthouse. When DAR could not find a record of my gGrandmother's birth, I wondered what to do, for my mother had died thinking she was a member of the Star Fort Chapter of DAR and the letter came about two weeks after her death.I thought about 2 minutes and it came to me that if she died she had to have been born!! A quick trip to the courthouse and I had in my hands her death certificate. It went through in rapid fashion with no other questions. Sometimes a quick afterthought is worth its weight in gold - and I am still in that chapter!!! Maybe it could work for you, too.Hope this will help, so let me know at my e-mail address: mduck@emeraldis. Thanks!
