Need help finding CODWISE family members. I have been chasing CODWISE from Alabama > South Carolina > St. Croix > New York.
The following information was listed in Luke Van Ranst's will of June 16,1788. In it he states that his daughter Anna Maria Van Ranst was the wife of George Codwise. Anna and George had the following children: (1) George (2) Christopher (3) Luke (4) James (5) David (6) Elizabeth who married Ezra Starr of CT (7) Maria (8) Cornelia. (Not necessarily in birth order.)
I am interested in the whole family but I am trying to trace who the father is of James R. Codwise born 1800 on St. Croix. James Codwise married Rebecca Rodgers in NY on November 5, 1797 and in Febuary 1798 he took the Oath of Allegiance to Denmark as he was the owner/operator of a Sugar Plantation named Mt. Victory on St. Croix. On 1815 St. Croix Census, James Codwise and Rebecca Rodgers Codwise were listed with 3 children; Caroline-9, Camellia-7, and David-1-1/4 years. James R. Codwise would have been 15 at the time of the Census, but apparently was not in the household at the time.
James R. Codwise married Martha (last name unknown) most likely in South Carolina as his wife and first born, James M. were both born in South Carolina. On the 1850 Bibb County, Alabama Census James R. and Martha's children were (1) James M.-16, (2) Mary J.-12, (3) David W.-10, (4) Milford-8, (5) William-6, (6) Amy M.-5, (7) Rebecca-2.
I'm trying to find out where James R. Codwise was from birth and where in South Carolina was he married and his son born. Was James R. living with another relative in New York? Are James and Rebecca Rodgers Codwise his parents? Is there anyone out there related to any of these people?
