Hollands and Dossetts in Roane and Lincoln Tennessee
I just wanted to bump this old message up and respond to it. My husband is a direct descendant of James Holland Dossett- son of Ila Dossett and Mary "Polly" Holland-who is the son of William Dossett and Drucilla Forrister/Forrester/Forrest in Orange NC.
First, James Holland Dossett did marry the widow Nancy Hughs and had 3 children by her: Ila F. Dossett (1843) my husbands family tie), Elbert Dossett (1846) and George Dossett (1848).There is a gap between the birth of Ila F. Dossett and his brother Elbert, so there is a possibility that there is one or more children that were born between these dates that did not survive.
Second, William Ila Dossett (1840) and Drucilla Dossett (1838) who are living in the household of James Holland Dossett in 1850, are NOT his children. They are the orphaned children of his brother William Dossett and his wife Nancy Stevens.James Holland raised his niece and nephew. This is the Dossett MO...They take care of their family....
Third, there are two other children of William Dossett and Nancy Stevens.1)Mary Ann Dossett (1835), living with Wiley R. Palmer and wife Margaret.(It is my suspicion that Nancys maiden name is Palmer, the wife of James Holland Dossett. No proof as of yet). and 2) Nancy Angeline Dossett (1842).Nancy Angeline Dossett is living with Abner Barnard and his wife Sarah.Abner Barnard is the brother ofNancy J. Barnard, who married Elbert Dossett, youngest brother of James Holland Dossett and the deceased William Dossett.
Fourth, The land that William Dossett purchased in 1839 is divided up between his 4 orphaned (William Ila, Mary Ann, Drucilla and Nancy Angeline Dossett children in 1852.
There are SO many misconceptions/incorrect information passed on about this family that I have found, it is no wonder people are having a hard time tracing their true lines.
In regards to the name of Drucilla "Forrester" being named "Mary Drucilla Forrester Dossett", I have seen NO evidence as of yet that her first name is "Mary".I have only seen her name as "Drucilla".Next, all of the family trees have her dying about 1800 in NC.This information is incorrect. She returns to the Orange Co NC area, surrounded by family, (after the death of her husband William) and can be found in 1820 census with some of her children. Her youngest child named Elbert Dossett....
I have found NO records of William Dossetts (husband of Drucilla) middle name as being "Edmond/Edmund" either.
There are 2 William Dossetts in the Orange Co NC area in 1800, it is my belief that these two "Williams" information are being combined and confused. It is my working theory that the older William in this area may be named William Edmund Dossett and that HE may have had a wife named Mary. This William and Mary Dossett look to have moved to the Campbell Co. Tennessee area.Their children fit the age groupings.
The other and younger William Dossett, who married Drucilla Forrester, fit to be the parents of Ila Dossett, who married Polly Holland in Roane Tenn. in 1809, then relocated and lived out their lives in Lincoln, Tennessee.
My question here is this:Is the younger William Dossett (who married Drucilla Forrester) the son of the older William Dossett that went to Campbell Tennessee? While this could be the case, the age groupings of the older William Dossetts children would suggest not....
There are 2 other Dossett families in Orange Co NC in 1800.
One is a Thomas Dossett...He is of the same age grouping as the younger William (who married Drucilla). He is the son of Moses Dossett, who died in the Rev. War in SC.This information comes from the Rev. War pension paperwork of this Thomas Dossett. He tells that he was born in 1758 Orange Co NC, and his father relocated to SC where Thomas served under his father LT Moses Dossett in the Rev. War in SC.Thomas goes on to say he moved back to NC, then to Tenn then on to KY where he settled. Is this Thomas the brother to the younger William (that married Drucilla)?
The other Dossett in the area is of an Elizabeth Dossett, also with males that are of the correct age grouping to be brothers of the Younger William that married Drucilla. Is this Elizabeth the widow of Moses, Mother to Thomas?or a widow of a totally unknown Dossett male?
The name "Ila" clearly comes from the Forrester side of the family. The name "Elbert" looks to come from the Dossett side of the family. Is Elizabeth the widow of an "Elbert" Dossett? Was Elizabeths maiden name "Elbert"?Things to contemplate...Any thoughts or input on this would be greatly appreciated!
