Samuel Hurt & Martha Belcher families

By Kandie Ellars June 21, 2004 at 09:42:03

Edithe,
I did get your message, I just wasn't sure that I'd be able to get a message to you again!!! My Great-great grandmother is Sarah Franklin Hurt sister of Mary Florence? You probably started out with a lot more information than I did. What I have found has been from the internet. Hard to verify some. But here is what I have.
My mothers parents divorced when she was 2. Her fathers' mothers' name was Virginia Pearl Vaught. Her parents were James William Vaught and Sarah Franklin Hurt. All from West Virginia. James and Sarah moved around a bit and died in Colorado. Sarah Franklin Hurts parents were Samuel Hurt and Martha Belcher. I found Sarah as a child in the 1880 census.

I believe that Mahala was named after her Maternal grandmother Belcher. She is on a census in the same area with Marthas brother William.

Marthas' father was James C. Belcher. I found them as a family group in Virginia, Mercer Co., My District:
James C. Belcher 36, Mahala 40, Eliza 14, Middleton 12, William 9, Phillip 7, Martha 5, Rebecca 2.

i'm still looking for the parents' of Samuel Hurt. The 1880 census says that his fathers birthplace was IRE, some people have him down as a son of a Fountain G. Hurt in VA. It's possible but the Ireland part doesn't fit. Please share what information you have!!!
Thank you, Kandie Ellars
