Deborah (Stockton) McMahon
I am looking for information about the death and burial of Deborah (Stockton) McMahon, who probably moved to Harrisonburg, VA in later life to live with son, William.Debora was born about 1738 in Albemarle County, VA. but married then lived in Augusta County.Widowed in 1784; lived in Augusta till at least 1810. DAR records show death in Harrisonburg circa 1820.(Any other family information is welcome.)
The following information may help identify son, William, McMahon and assist in finding his mother as well:
William McMahon, b. 12Aug 1780, Augusta VA, son of Lt. John McMahon and Debora Stockton McMahon.He married (date unk.) Rebecca Patton, probably in Augusta.
William owned slaves after moving to Harrisonburg: 2 in 1810,6 in 1820, and 9 in 1830, so probably not a major planter, but may have been a businessman.In 1807, he built The Old Washington Tavern in Harrisonburg,VA.(He had partners.)He was not taxed as a tavern owner in 1810-1813 that I can find.
His children are John Jordan McMahon, merchant, b. 1805 Harrisonburg, d. 1852 of cholera in New Orleans, LA;
William P. McMahon, b. 1808 Harrisonburg, d. unk date, Courtland, AL; b. 1810, Harrisonburg, d. date unk, Gainesville, AL; Mary E. (McMahon) Cravens, b. 1811 VA, d. 1882 Gainesville, AL; Robert Grattan McMahon, b. 1813, VA, d. 1880 Gainesville; Asher Waterman McMahon, b. 1817, VA, d. 1889, Gainesville; Maria Rebecca 1817-1818; and, apparently, late in life, Ethelbert S. (Bert) McMahon b. 1835 Harrisonburg, d. unk.
In 1838, William followed his son, John J.McMahon (1828, of Bierne & McMahon Company), moving to Courtland AL. Wm. had a plantation near Courtland.
Col. William McMahon died in 1846; Rebecca in 1856.
Thank you for any leads.Will share information. Have many sound sources.
