One of the most horrible crimes in the history of Iowa county was committed in Blue Mounds Valley, in the town of Arena, on Jan. 6, 1885, Conrad Remley was cruelly murdered by his son, Charles, who was twenty-one years of age. The story of this awful deed, as told by young Remley and his mother is that Mr. Remley had retired early and that about 7:30 o'clock, as Mrs, Remley entered the bedroom, and found Remley sitting up in bed, holding in his hand a pistol, which his eldest son, Joseph, had recently brought with him from Dakota, and he said to her. "You and the rest of them will soon see hell"; she screamed and called to their two sons, Charles and Frank, who were in the adjoining room, to come quick. "Father is going to kill us." and Charles grabbed up a gambrel which was in the house and struck bis father twice over the head, killing him. The reason assigned by the young man for striking the second blow was that he did not wish to see his father suffer. The examination of Charles Remley and mother. Mrs. Remley, took place at Dodgeville, Jan. 12, 1885. and both were committed to jail.On March 31, Charles Remley was Found guilty of murder in the first degree, and was sentenced by Judge Clementson to the State prison at Waupon for the term of his natural life, at hard labor, with the exception of the sixth of January of each year, on which date he shall suffer solitary confinement, Mrs. Remley's trial was pOstponed until the October term of court, when She was found guilty of murder in the first degree and sentenced to the Slate prison for life.
