Perry Abbott 4/01/99
First I want to thank you again for your interest & help in my quest to find out more about my 2G Grandfather, Sewell A. Abbott. I've seen the name Abbott spelled with one or two T's, so I don't know which is correct! I sent alot of info.
Here we go on Sewell A. Abbott's family information---
Sewell A.,born 1-4-1842 in Raymond, NH. died 1-25-1870 in Brentwood, NH of Consumption(TB).The Old Cemetery, Town of South Hampton, NH,Thats what his disinterment application states.
His parents were-Sewell & Sally Locke Pollard Abbott.
I only know that this Sewell MIGHT had been Peter & Miriam Smith Abbot's son. If that is correct he was born abt. 1801, died 1-5-1842 in Raymond.
As for Sally, her maiden name is Locke. She was born on 2-17-1809 in Brentwood, NH. I don't know her death date. Her parents were John W. & Anna James Locke. Sally first married John Pollard, they had 7 children. She then married Sewell Abbott & had 1 child, the one in Union Cem(Betty Farmer), Sewell A. Abbott.
Sewell A. Abbott married Alice L. Tenney on 4-16-1864 in Newton, NH. Alice was born on 4-3-1843 to Edmund C. & Joanna Thompson Tenney in South Hampton, NH. I don't know when Alice died. Sometime after Sewell A. died, Alice married O. B. Hanscom, I can find nothing on them!
The children of Sewell A. & Alice Tenney Abbott were--
1. Sewell E. Abbott, born 4-17-1865 in Epping, NH.
2. Arthur E. Abbott, born 5-3-1868 in Chester, NH. When he died is a mystery to me, maybe he is buried near his father? He married Aurelia A. Wilbur in Newton, NH on 11-28-1904. Her parents were Gilbert & Sarah A. White Sultz of New Brunswick.
Now, information on my Great Grandfather-
He was born Sewell E. to Sewell A. & Alice Tenney Abbott. His father died before he was 5 years old, family stories claim that he was put up for adoption & his younger brother, Arthur was raised by by Alice's family. Sewell E. was brought to Michigan andraised by Ed. Bucknell.
The earliest I found him in Michigan was 1880. He shows up on the 1880 census in Watson Twp. Allegan co. Michigan with Edwin & Sarah Bucknell. His name was listed as Everett A. Bucknell. All through his teen & adult life. He found out later in life that the Bucknells never did adopt him. He was bitter about his real motherputting him up for adoption and bitter towards the Bucknells for not adopting him. He kept using the Bucknell name all his life.
We have letters from the 1880's from Alice L. Hanscom wanting him to write to her & signing it as your mother, she was in Amesbury, MA then. Also letters from his cousins, Suzie Cheevers who married Charles Burbeck & Jenni Welch who married Allan Senter. They were from Newton & South Hampton.
Everett Abbott (Sewell E.) Bucknell died on 6-14-1934 in Gun Plains Twp. Allegan co. Michigan. He married Carrie A. Pratt on 10-17-1886 in Wayland, MI.They had 5 daughters, the second one was my Father's mother, Hattie C. Bucknell.
