My GGrandfather William Abbott was convicted of stealing 'two barn fowls' the property of one John Baguelly in the Derbyshire Quarter Sessions on 19/10/1819, and sentenced to six months prison and seven years transportation to NSW, Australia. He was described in the court record as aged 23, late of the parish of Stanton-by-Dale, labourer, but his 'native place' was given as Staunton. He was granted a Certificate of Freedom dated 18/10/1826 in NSW, then disappeared to turn up in Wellington New Zealand in about 1840. He does not appear in the NSW census taken inlate 1826. He died in 1877 and his birthplace is given as Notts. In his obituary he was said to have been in 'New Zealand waters' since the 1820s. Can anyone help with further info allowing me to regress further?
