Ernie, Thank you so much for the information. I'd found Joseph Ables in St. Claire County, Alabama (Cropwell) on the 1860 Census. By then the mother must've died, and several of the children must've married and left home. It confused me because Joseph listed his birthplace as Georgia. (Martha Elizabeth Able/s Ragland had listed it on the 1900 Census of Calhoun County, Mississippi. She lived until 1933. She also said that her mother was b in Tennessee. (That would fit right in with what you said about the brother migrating as they did.)
Does anyone know where Joseph's grave (in St.Claire County?) is?
Since I posted the message that you replied to, one of John Calhoun Able's descendents (who lives in Mississippi) had contacted me. She says that Martha J. and Missouri Caledonia Graham were sisters.
Please keep in touch if you find anything new. You may e-mail me @ Jommarch@aol.com, if you like. And thank you again. I plan a genealogy hunting trip up in to Alabama really soon; so your message was timed perfectly. Jo Bennett
