Hi, I would like to know if any connection has been made between the CT and the VA Abernathy/Abernethy families?
I descend from Robert Abernathy who apparently was shipped to the Colony of Virginia ca 1652 as an indentured soldier from Battle of Worcester by Cromwell. He married as soon as his 5 years were up to Sarah Coppage/Cubisch, a widow with dau. Sarah. I have yet to locate parents for him. I have my line proven from him to myself. Now I stand at the brick wall we all dread after years of research.
Avord M. Abernethy, late of Hamilton, TX, in his 1994 book mentions William Abernathy of Branford, CT but no relationship noted. His work consisted mainly from descendants who shared with him. Thus there are many errors to check out when enjoying his work. It is a great research tool. Arvord shares; In 1670. there was a William Abernethy, born in Scotland, living in Branford, CT. He later moved to Wallington CT where he married Sarah Doolittle. They were the parents of William and Samuel Abernethy and possibly others. William married second Elizabeth and ch. if any are unkown.
The older son, William Jr., was born July 25, 1675. He married Lois Gaylord, of Wallington, CT on Sept. 26, 1733, and were the parents of 12 children; 1.) Caleb, eldest died in 1759 2.) John, executor of his father's will, married Lucy Washburn in 1762. They had 6 children; Lydia Butler Miner who was Aunt of Major General Butler-famous in the Civil War. Waite of Washington, CT who married in 1805 Sally Powell and had three children; Delia, John and William.
I have not proved any of above but share it with those who descend from this line to verify.
Can anyone shed any light on this Abernathy family for me please. Ginny Keefer
