Many thanks for the replies! When I first began to inquire about the nomenclature of my sirname, I was overwhelmed by the whealth of information regarding the Scottish "Abernathy/Abernethy" history.
Being a person of color, I was concerned this might not be as an effective resources for me. However... I have a son, and I think I owe it to him to tell him as much about his heritage as I can.
I have posted as much as I currently know about my family, to the "World Tree". My father's father was from Greensboro, NC. My Great Granfather's identity is unknown to me. I have also come across some slave-manuscripts that mention a plantation owner in Lincoln County, NC that bequethed several slaves to his daughter, and her husband.
I am also aware of an Abernathy family of color in Atlanta, GA. This is the family of the late Rev. Ralph David Abernathy who served as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's right-hand during the civil rights movement. He even has a street named for him.
