I have an un-named daughter of the appropriate age who is very probably your Adeline.

I think the one living next to Amelia isn't related at all, simply the widow of a different Adams, possibly not even one related to Edwin. I suspect the one in District 23 in 1860 _is_ Adeline, daughter of Charles and Amelia Abernathy. It could be that Edwin could not obtain a farm near his prospective in-laws before he married. I also note the fact that the Abernathys were in District 23 in 1850 when Edwin, Adeline and family were in District 20. Clearly a redefinition of Districts occured sometime between 1850 and 1860.
Alas, I have no definitive evidence to support my hypothesis at this time, simply many years of trying to figure out these sorts of things.
All I can suggest is that you just keep digging.... some clue may eventually turn up that provides the answer.
