I got your message on this yesterday and replied Sunday, September 13, 2009 10:19 AM. Got the notification it was blocked as spam while I was at the Doctor's office this morning.
Here's what I replied.
Yes, and he's not your line at all! This is a son of William Abernathy and Elizabeth, later Mrs Michael Hunt, of the Ninety-Six District, present day Newberry & Laurens Co, SC, and you're right about some of them being loyalists during the Revolution.
Many descendants of this branch of Abernathys migrated to Fulton & DeKalb Co., GA; to Floyd, Polk, Haralson & Troup Co, GA; to Chambers, Tallapoosa & Cherokee Co., AL; to Rankin, Simpson, Tippah, DeSoto & Madison Co, MS. I believe there are currently also descendants in AR, TN & TX as well as SC, GA, AL, MS & LA.
DNA analysis indicates they are distantly related to our Scottish branch, but no more or less so than the Irish branch found in PA shortly after 1700 and now spread into WV, IL and IN, IA & westward from there.
