Cousin Gordon, What little info that I've gathered, comes mainly from going to Highland Games and a couple of Scots Clan Gatherings when I lived in Pomona, Claremont, and Montclair, Ca. All the gatherings seemed to be in Long Beach, Ca. I do know one thing, I am jealous that you are going to Scotland, and you are taking up the Pipes. I've threatened to take them up myself, but just can't find the time. I do know that Abernathy (Abernethy, Abernathie, etc.) means in Gaelic is " Home atthe mouth of the River". And Castle Abernethy is at the mouth of a river. I've been unable to find a photo of Abernethy Castle, but one item I read on one of the many web sites on Scotland is that the castle is actually 1 of 2 battlement style towers that are about 70ft. tall. And there is only 2 of these towers in all of Scotland. As I wrote in answer to Joe I'm getting some info sent from friends in Calif. that are heavily into the Scottish history thing, and probably have more info on Scottish Clans and the sort at home in their personal library, than any public library I've been to. And one of the brothers plays the Pipes and I think may still work at "The Scottish Store", in Claremont, Ca. So hopefully I can talk the Brothers Denton to send me an Abernathy Clan Care Package. To get back to your travel to Scotland, The family stomping grounds where the castle is, is on the north west coastal area at the mouth of a fairly large river according to the Clan map of Scotland that I had seen. If I come across one of those Clan Maps again, I will post where to get one, and any other info to have. On the relations end of the spectrum, I know more family name history on the Danish side than I do the Scots side as my parents seperated when I was 10yrs. old, but I have my mother writing down dads side of the family names, birthplaces, dates if possible, and anything else she can think of. And all will be posted in the future if usable to anyone and all. Gordon, good luck on the Pipes and read anything you can about Clans, regions of origin, and Scotland. And then sit back and roll it around in your mind, sort it out so you understand as you would and not the authors point of view. Fraiser, MacDuff, and Leslie are Septs that Abernathy became when the Clan lost it's Lairdship (Lordship) of Saltoun. Politics sucks. You lose a title to some other family and you get a black stripe on ypur family Coat of Arms. Whats the ancient world coming to.
Talk to you later, Gordon. As I said before, good luck with the Pipes.William (Bill) Abernathy
