thanks for your response.i will look to south carolina.
from m.a. lester, "old southern bible records" (baltimore: GPC 1974 pp.1-2) matthew wills married (1780) martha (patsy) abney, daughter of nathaniel and isabella.elias and elizabeth (?abney) wills had a son matthew whose wife was named patsy (martha) but his father deeded him 1100a in 1791 in fluvanna, va.a matthew wills married martha (patsy) daniel in 1788 in cumberland, va, (across the river from fluvanna).a second marriage?, different matthews?the other children of elias married napier, cole, ware, thurmond, greenhow, barclay and LNU.
the putative abney connection comes from only one (secondary, undocumented) source.other (secondary, undocumented) sources call elias's wife dabney or dancy, both of which could be misreadings of cursive abney (or vice versa).dancy has always seemed the most likely to me, since one of elias's sons is benjamin dancy wills and three grandaughters are named "elizabeth dancy -." there are no uses of abraham, nathaniel, george, paul or dannet among descendants, to my knowledge.
