So much information...so few facts. Where does one begin to debunk decades of erroneous information so freely distributed as though someone actually proved it?
Descendants of Bathusa Stratton
>>>>>RRA Note: The correct spelling of the name (Biblically) is Bathshua, which is exactly the way Bathshua spelled when she wrote and signed her will. To the best of my knowledge, the alleged surname STRATTON (or STRETTON) has never been proved. I remember seeing a letter from a British Genealogist (Michael...sorry, can't remember his surname at the moment) to "Uncle" Joe H. BAKER, genealogist (may he rest in peace) which read (paraphrasing here) that he had been unable to find any proof of Bathshua's surname, however a couple of families were possibilities. STRETTON (a.k.a. STRATTON) was one of them. But that was the last I'd seen. A certain update by Cousin John HENSELL (may he rest in peace) claimed that further research had shown her to be a STRATTON. However, I believe Cousin John misread the letter. Anyway, STRATTON is a possibility, but should be written with a "?". To be certain, her surname certainly wasn't Dannett! I first saw this on the LDS database. It actually brought on a chuckle. By the time "our" Dannett ABNEY was born, "Dannett" as a given name, had already been in the family for 3 generations. Dannett's granduncle (and godfather) born the name. It is probable (although, again, I don't think proved) that Isabella (wife of William LUDLAM) was a DANNET (sic)<<<<<
Generation No. 1
1. BATHUSA1 STRATTON was born Abt. 1630 in Leicester, England,
>>>>>RRA Note: I have never seen any document to indicate a birth year nor place of birth.<<<<<
and died Aft. 01/08/1705-06.
>>>>>RRA Note: Her will was written on 08 Jan 1706 & probated on 22 Sep 1712 in Leicester, Leicestershire, Eng.<<<<<
She married (1) GEORGE ABNEY, SR. Abt. 1651 in St. Marys Church, Leicester, England, son of PAUL ABNEY and MARY BROKESBY.
>>>>>RRA Note: I have not seen a document to indicate the marriage was in St. Mary's Church.<<<<<
He was born Bef. 07/11/1613 in Leicester, England, and died 05/03/1661.
>>>>>RRA Note: George ABNEY was bapt.11 Jul 1613 in St. Mary's Church; and buried (not died) 03 May 1661 also at St. Mary's.<<<<<
She married (2) JOSEPH LEE 03/07/1662-63 in St. Mary's of Leicester.
>>>>>RRA Note: Her marriage to Joseph LEE was on 07 Feb 1664 in St. Mary's Church.<<<<<
He was born Abt. 1635.
>>>>>RRA Note: Impossible. Joseph LEE was bapt.05 Nov 1620 at Catthorp, Leicestershire, Eng.
Children of BATHUSA STRATTON and GEORGE ABNEY are:
i.PAUL2 ABNEY1, b. 01/22/1650-51; d. Aft. 1686; m. MARY LEE, Bef. 1686; b. Abt. 1660, Ashfordby, England.
>>>>>RRA Note: Lt. Paul ABNEY was born 14 Jan 1653 & bapt. 22 Jan 1653 at St. Mary's Church. On 15 Sep 1679, he secured a position of Lieutenant on a sloop "Josiah" trading with Virginia. This should give us a clue that he is not living IN Virginia...only trading WITH Virginia. On 03 Jun 1686, "about a day's sailout of Virginia" the ship on which he worked was seized by a Spanish Man-o-War of the Barlo Vento Fleet. The cargo was pirated and Paul was forced to sign a receipt therefor. On 26 Jun 1686, Paul ABNEY was deposed in England (not Virginia!). Then on 28 Oct 1687 Gov. Richard Coney writes a letter to the deputy governor, Sir James Russell begging that Lt. Paul be not imprisoned. This is the last record I have seen of Lt. Paul ABNEY. If anyone has another, PLEASE bring it to public light. In the extant records of this Paul ABNEY, there is absolutely nothing to indicate that he was ever married, nor that he settled in Virginia, nor that he had issue. This entire story is a creation by earlier genealogists. Even Cousin John HENSELL who first published this theory (in his manuscript ABNEY *1974), recanted it in his ABNEY Supplement *1988. Yet, the fairy tale continues to be told. It should start "Once upon a time..."<<<<<
ii.ABRAHAM ABNEY1, b. Bef. 09/07/1655; d. Aft. 05/28/1689.
>>>>>RRA Note: Abraham ABNEY was born 07 Sep 1655, bapt.12 Sep 1655 at St. Mary's Church. His will was probated 28 Jun 1689. He bequeathed £50 to his brother, Dannett.<<<<<
2.iii.DANNETT ABNEY, SR., b. Bef. 02/26/1658-59, Leicester, England; d. 02/05/1731-32, Spotsylvania Co., VA.
>>>>>RRA Note: He should be 4th child, not 3rd. See corrections below<<<<<
iv.GEORGE ABNEY, JR.2, b. Bef. 02/26/1658-59, Leicester, England; d. Bef. 1689, probably London, England.
>>>>>RRA Note: He should be 3rd child, not 4th. George was bapt. 22 Feb 1657. His death date/place is unknown, but he is believed to have died before his brother Abraham wrote his will because George is not mentioned therein.
Generation No. 2
2. DANNETT2 ABNEY, SR. (BATHUSA1 STRATTON)3 was born Bef. 02/26/1658-59 in Leicester, England,
>>>>>RRA Note: Dannett ABNEY was bapt. 26 Feb 1659 at St. Mary's Church. We can be reasonably certain he was born in Feb of this same year (since his eldest two brothers were baptized within one and two weeks of their birth), and in Leicester, England.<<<<<
and died 02/05/1731-32 in Spotsylvania Co., VA.
>>>>>RRA Note: He certainly did NOT die on the date given here, however. He wrote his will on 05 Feb 1732. On 02 Oct 1733, he and his wife, with Dannett Jr. & his wife, deeded land to Humphrey HILL. Four months later, Mary (widow of Dannett ABNEY Sr.) presented his will to a Spotsylvania County court. (Before the Great Britain Calendar Act of 1751, March 24th was the first day of the new year. Therefore, October came BEFORE February. So Dannett ABNEY Sr. died in 1733, between October & February (it would be incorrect to say between February & October since in 1733, October came "before" February).<<<<<
He married MARY LEE Aft. 1686 in VA, daughter of JOSEPH LEE and ANNE. She was born Abt. 1660 in Ashfordby, England.
>>>>>RRA Note: This argument may never be settled, at least not in my lifetime. Anyway, I believe his wife's surname was LEE, however, with little more than circumstantial evidence (mostly nomenclatural). Anyway, according to the records of Leicester, England, we can prove the children of Rev. Joseph LEE & first wife, Anne as: Joseph, Nathaniel, Anne (died young), (another) Anne, Samuel, and John. Notice, no Mary! I believe Dannett's wife "might" have been a step-niece (daughter of one of his step-brothers, sharing no blood between them). But again, this has never been proved. As concerns the birth year of Mary, through a long and logical process I came up with an "estimate" of 1675. If born in 1760 as has been published, she would have been well into her 50's still bearing children!<<<<<
Children of DANNETT ABNEY and MARY LEE are:
i.URSULA3 ABNEY, b. Bef. 06/11/1693.
>>>>>RRA Note: She was bapt. 11 Jun 1693 Abingdon Church, Gloucester Co., VA<<<<<
ii.DANNETT ABNEY, JR., b. Abt. 1697; m. MARY MEREDITH; b. Abt. 1697.
>>>>>RRA Note: I estimate his birth at 1695. I had not wanted to believe that his wife was a MEREDITH. However, their daughter, Maacah ABNEY m. Thomas SPRAGGINS (s/o William SPRAGGINS & Martha ABNEY) and named a son Samuel Meredith SPRAGGINS. I think it ludicrous to attempt to assign her a birth year based only on the estimate of her husband's.<<<<<
iii.GEORGE ABNEY, b. Abt. 1698; d. Bef. 10/16/1765; m. UNITY; b. Abt. 1700.
>>>>>RRA Note: I estimate his birth at 1697. It has been written that he d.01 Oct 1766, but I don't have a primary source for this. His will was probated 16 Oct 1766 in Halifax Co., VA.Again, knowing so little about Unity, I think it ludicrous to assign her a birth year.<<<<<
>>>>>RRA Note: Here we should insert iv. Paul ABNEY, bapt. 24 Dec 1699 Abingdon Church. We know Paul had issue, but we have not yet located a spouse's name for him. I know of one child, John ABNEY/ABNER. It is quite probable that Lucy (m. Jonathan "John" WITT Sr.) was a daughter of this Paul ABNEY.<<<<<
iv.ABRAHAM ABNEY, b. Bef. 12/27/1702, Leicester, England;
>>>>>RRA Note: Dr. Abraham ABNEY (my ancestor) should be #v. He was bapt. 27 Dec 1702 in Abingdon Church, Gloucester Co., VA (NOT in Leic., Eng. - the Abraham bapt. in Leicester was this Abraham's uncle!)
d. 1783, VA;
>>>>>RRA Note: To be certain, Dr. Abraham ABNEY was living in South Carolina as late as 04 Oct 1783. Prior to this record, we know he was living in that part of Camden District which in 1785 became Chester County, SC. On 01 Jan 1787, Cassandra ABNEY (his widow) was granted 640 acres of land in Orangeburg Dist., SC (where her son, Dr. Nathaniel ABNEY had removed). Since she was being granted land without her husband, it is same to assume he died in Chester Co., SC between 04 Oct 1783 & 01 Jan 1787.<<<<<
m. CASSANDRA MEREDITH; b. Abt. 1718, Leicester, England or Halifax, VA; d. Aft. 01/01/1787, VA.
>>>>>RRA Note: Firstly, we don't know when she was born; but if pressed, I would venture a guess closer to 1710. Secondly, I have not found one piece of evidence to substantiate claims by earlier researchers that Cassandra was a sister of Mary MEREDITH (wife of Dannett ABNEY Jr.)and a daughter of Samuel MEREDITH. IF she was, we can be certain she wasn't born in Leicester, England NOR in Halifax Co., VA. In fact, there was no Halifax County in 1718. Halifax County wasn't created until 17 May 1752.<<<<<
v.MARTHA ABNEY, b. 1704, Halifax Co., VA; m. WILLIAM SPRAGGINS; b. Abt. 1704.
>>>>>RRA Note: Martha should be #vi. Through a series of logical deductions, I estimate her birth at 1705. William, on the other hand, was probably born in the late 1690's.<<<<<
>>>>>RRA Note: Here, thanks to the HILL researchers, we insert vii. Bathshua ABNEY (b.est.1708) m. Thomas HILL<<<<<
vi.ABNER ABNEY, b. 1706.
>>>>>>RRA Note: Abner should be #viii. I estimate Abner's birth at 1711. He m. Anne (KEY?) & had issue.<<<<<
vii.PAUL ABNEY, b. Abt. 1708.
>>>>>RRA Note: Paul was born 1699. See my notes above.<<<<<
viii.MARY ABNEY, b. 1710; m. JOHN BARNARD, 05/12/1729; b. Abt. 1710, Albermarle Co., VA.
>>>>>RRA Note: I estimate Mary's birth at 1714. She m. John BERNARD on 02 May 1729. Mary is the last child we know of, although I am not completely confident there wasn't others.
ix.WILLIAM ABNEY, b. 1712; m. SARAH SPRAGGINS; b. Abt. 1712.
>>>>>RRA Note: There was definitely not a child in this generation named William...and there was no marriage to Sarah SPRAGGINS! The confusion stemmed from one record of Amelia County, VA, which turns out to have been a record of Capt. William ABNEY, s/o George ABNEY & Unity. After creating an extra person in this generation, a wife & child were also created for him.<<<<<
"...evidently returned to England where he married his step-sister, Mary Lee, and returned to Va. with step-brother John Lee..."
>>>>>RRA Note: Well, we really don't know about this. But to be certain Dannett was in York Co., VA as early as 26 Sep 1692. Ursula ABNEY, whom we believe to have been his eldest child, was bapt. 11 Jun 1693. Then, on 20 Apr 1694, we have: "JOHN LEE, 960 acres, Upper part of Nansemond County; on East side of Sumerton Creek, 20 Apr 1694, p. 341. Beginning on a small island on East side of said Creek; to Northeast side of the Cyprus Swamp, &c. Importation of 20 persons: Dennit Abney, Mary Emerson, Hannah Haines, Elizabeth Evans, Catherine Jones, Rachell Redfera, Alice Godale, Thomas Godale, George Lawrence, Walter Wright, William Knowles, Adam Broach, John Watts, John Saterwhite; Pallas, Attkena, Jupiter, Vulcan, Mars, Negroes."
The question is: Did John LEE receive this land immediately after the importation of these persons? Did he have to wait a certain period of time? (weeks? months? years?) Moreover, what was John LEE's involvement in this importation? Was he ship captain? ship owner? financier? There are many questions unanswered as concerns this record.<<<<<
NOTE: Mary Lee was his mother's daughter by her 2nd husband, Joseph Lee.
>>>>>RRA Note: This is disgusting! I don't know who came up with this sickening theory. Now, some later researcher moved from the erroneous belief of the earlier researchers that Dannett married a step-sister to Dannett married a half-sister! And all this with not an iota of proof!!! When will it stop????? When we have Dannett marrying a full sister? There is only one daughter to Bathshua (and that by her second husband) that we can prove; and her name wasn't Mary...and she certainly wasn't Dannett's combination half-sister/wife! 'Nuf Said!<<<<<
I hope this clears this matter up.
