I just found this forum, and hope you access this post a year later!I live in Wayne County NY near where Benajer (aka Benajah) lived and died in Savannah NY where he moved from Victor NY.He was at one point a town supervisor in Savannah (an elected official). He is a collateral relative of mine, and I do have some info on him.I certainly have a great deal on his relative in my firect lineage.
When Benajer moved to this area, he first appears as an adult in Marcellus or Camillus NY (Onondaga County) near Syracuse.I believe he is a direct descendent of Andrew Abrams (Abrahams) who is brother to Henry Abrahams and James Abrahams who came to cnetral NY from Newburgh NY around 1798-1800.Andrew actually arrived much later, and I am not sure where he was.Henry settled in Cato NY on the Seneca River Cayuga County and James in Camillus in Onondaga County.I believe James, Henry and Andrew are sons of John and Hannah Abrahams of Newburgh, but there also appear to be 2 John Abrams in the Orange/Ulster County areas in the mid 1700's so one must be careful of the lineage.
The family surname changed in the census records around 1810-1820.Henry (my gggggrandfather) and his brothers kept the longer spelling.Issac (my gggrandfather) shortened it to Abrams.
Interestingly, Andrew was a farmer listed as head of household in Bulter NY (Wayne County) in his older years--70-80 years of age. That was when he relocated, tough old bird. Not all of us would care to do that at that age.
Respond to me here or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.I have notes and records in the attic if you would like more info. You will also find the dates of Benajer's community service at the Wyne County NY website.
