It was the English part that surprised me, not the Jewish part.We are from Long Island, NY which has a large Jewish population, and we, too, were often mistaken as Jewish.I use to laughingly tell them that the H in Abrahms stood for Hebrew - no H meant German.
I guess the English origin isn't too surprising when you consider that the English also have a German heritage.However, I have never met an English Abrams.
