You do not add an ancestor in your family tree "until proven otherwise."
You are not supposed to add someone to your family tree until you PROVE the connection.
Otherwise, someone could concoct a totally fictitious family tree -- which actually, now that I think about it, many people have done! -- and then spread it around as fact, while waiting for someone to disprove it.
Excuse me -- I guess I should be saying that genealogists wait to add someone to their family tree until the connection is proved.
Genealogy collectors do operate the other way around, and add any names, dates, places, etc., that anyone gives them, without any record to verifiable fact.
I thank you for identifying yourself so clearly as a genealogy collector. Now if we could only get the rest of the genealogy collectors to likewise identify themselves.
Or better yet, maybe we could start two different GenForums! We could have one for genealogists, who would be expected to have proof for everyone they claim as their ancestors and relatives, and we could have a separate GenForum for genealogy collectors, who could copy each others rumors and trade their unsupported suppositions with each other, and state unsubstantiated allegations as "facts" and cheerfull pass on what they "know" without irritating the heck out of genealogists.
