Re: MARIA ACKERMAN, b 1747, Bergen Cty. NJ
Yes, we are talking about the same guy. I too, have conflicting information concerning who he married and the children of the marriage or marriages.
I am aware of the detailed documentation by Toler and Riker. As you say, these sources indicate his wife was Maria Christie.
The conflicting information is in the form of a family group sheet obtained from Everton Publishers. (We responded to an ad in one of the genealogy journals published by Everton). I can send you a fax copy or email attachment so that you have the same information. In any case, this family group sheet indicates PPB married Maria Ackerman (b. 22 Nov 1747) abt 1766-67. The birth dates of the six children are included. The range of dates, from youngest to oldest, essentially overlaps those of Maria Christie's children. Consequently, it does not seem that one marriage preceded the other. I am as puzzled as you.
I am very interested in resolving the matter, since my ancestor (John Peter Bogart b. 11 Feb 1781) is from the Maria Ackerman marriage.
From my research, I believe it is possible that there were two men born abt. 1746 with similar names (Petrus P., Peter P. etc) who lived at about the same time in Bergen County, NJ. They may have been cousins. Petrus/Pieter/Peter was an extremely popular name for this branch of the Bogart family.
However, this is just a theory. So far, unsubstantiated.
I plan to continue searching for a birth/christening record for my ancestor, who was born in NY State. Hopefully. that will help to more clearly identify his parents.
I'll check out that Zabriske article.
Please let me know how you are related.
