From what I have been told, the name dates back to at least the 10th century England at the current spelling.It could be even older with a different spelling.Many similar names have evolved...probably due to migration.

I'm not sure if the name starts in England...or perhaps Germany???

Some "Ackles" (my ancestors anyway) migrated from England to Scotland then on to Canada and the United States.

My Ancestors orginally settled in the United States, but migrated to Nova Scotia, Canada during the War of Independance (or Revolution depending how you look at it!).Such migrators were referred to as "Loyalists" (loyal to the Throne).
