My grandfather, Harry Acton, was descended from the Actons of Charles and Prince George's Counties, Maryland, descended from the immigrant Henry Acton, who arrived in MD from Shropshire around 1700 or shortly after.. Following the Revolutionary War, they later moved into Virginia, then on to Belmont County OH. My grandfather grew up in Hendrysburg, Belmont Co.OH, and said that although the name was always spelled ACTON for centuries in England and early America, the locals in Belmont Countypronounced it Ecton.
I suppose it was just a local thing. Example:my husband's greatgreat grandmother was a Colvin, but the family cemetery in Kentucky is the Calvin Cemetery. I suspect her family name was actually originally Calvin.
