Parents of James Acton (1746-1819)
The ancestry of the James Acton (Abt 1746-1819) who married Elizabeth McCraft remains a mystery, but among the several possibilities one baptism record at London, England in 1746 stands out from the rest.
James Acton, son of James Acton,of the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards and his wife Margaret was baptised at the Fleet (Prison), London no 2 November 1746.
Just over 9 months earlier, James Acton, of the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards, married at Fleet Prison 22 January 1746 Margaret Mason, of St Margarets, Westminster.
Scans of the above baptism and marriage records are available online at:
Their marriage did not take place at the Fleet because they were criminals, but rather because it was cheaper. This was commonplace at the time.
If anyone has any information they can add about the family and origins of James Acton, of the 3rd Regiment of Foot or his wife Margaret I would love to hear about it.
I would like to stress this is not a definite match for the James Acton who married Elizabeth McCraft, but it seems like a reasonable possibility.
