My grandfather was a missionary in Mexico City sometime around 1918. He tried to purchase a wooden chest in the thieves market but his offers were too low. The frustrated seller burned the chest and sold the brass fittings to grandad for his original asking price!
The lock, corner, and handles are beautiful moorish style (chased? engraved?). The center piece has a less well done brass with the Acuna coat of arms. This could be from a different piece altogether, have been added to the chest to indicate possession, or be a fake to boost the value of the piece.
Does anyone have an inventory of possessions which came from the old world to the new?
There are 8 banners/flags surrounding the coat of arms.
